Exercise Physiology for
Weight Management
Weight management is not a willpower problem. It is a metabolic, hormonal and physiological challenge that responds to clinical intervention. At Beachside EP, we address the underlying drivers of weight gain and create sustainable, evidence-based change through exercise and nutrition working together.

Our Approach
We do not run weight loss programs. We run metabolic health programs.
The distinction matters. Weight loss as a goal on its own is often unsustainable and ignores the most important question: why is your body storing excess weight in the first place? Insulin resistance, hormonal dysregulation, chronic stress, poor sleep and a sedentary lifestyle are all metabolic drivers that exercise addresses directly and powerfully.
When we address those drivers through clinically prescribed exercise and aligned nutrition, weight loss follows as a consequence of improved metabolic health. That is a fundamentally different approach to what you will find at a commercial gym or a diet program, and it produces fundamentally different results.
A note on language and tone
We approach weight and body composition with sensitivity and without judgment. We do not use before and after language, we do not set arbitrary weight targets, and we do not shame. Our focus is on what your body can do, how your metabolic markers are improving, and how your quality of life is changing. Weight, where it changes, follows naturally from that focus.
Your Clinical Team
Exercise Physiology leads. Dietetics supports. Both are essential.
Exercise Physiology is the primary clinical intervention in our weight management programs. The metabolic effects of structured progressive exercise, particularly resistance training, are profound and cannot be replicated by diet alone. Our Dietitian works alongside to align your nutrition with your exercise program, not to replace it.
Braeden King and Sierra Bulauan
Accredited Exercise Physiologists who design and supervise the structured progressive exercise programs that drive metabolic change. Resistance training builds muscle mass, which directly increases resting metabolic rate and insulin sensitivity. Aerobic exercise improves cardiovascular health and energy balance. Together they address the physiological drivers of weight gain more effectively than any dietary change alone.
Samadi Mallawa
Accredited Practising Dietitian who assesses your current dietary patterns and aligns your nutrition with your exercise program. The focus is on fuelling your exercise, supporting muscle preservation during weight loss, and addressing the dietary contributors to insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction. No fad diets, no extreme restriction, no plans you cannot sustain.
What We Do
A clinical program addressing the real drivers of weight and metabolic health
Every program starts with a thorough assessment of your metabolic health, current activity level, body composition and lifestyle. We design exercise that is specific to your physiology and progress it systematically over time.
Progressive resistance trainingThe most important exercise intervention for metabolic health. Building muscle mass directly increases your resting metabolic rate and insulin sensitivity, creating sustainable metabolic change that persists beyond your sessions.
Aerobic and cardiovascular programmingStructured aerobic exercise to improve cardiovascular fitness, support energy balance and address the cardiovascular risk factors that accompany obesity including blood pressure and cholesterol.
Insulin resistance managementTargeted exercise programming to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce fasting glucose and address the metabolic dysregulation that drives weight gain and makes it so difficult to lose.
Body composition assessmentWe use InBody scanning to measure muscle mass, fat mass, visceral fat and metabolic rate, giving you a precise picture of what is changing in your body beyond what the scales show.
Nutritional alignment with your exercise programOur Dietitian ensures your food intake supports your exercise program, preserves muscle mass during fat loss, and addresses the dietary drivers of insulin resistance without unsustainable restriction.
Behaviour and habit supportSustainable weight management requires changes in behaviour and habit, not just a program to follow. We provide education and support around the lifestyle factors that underpin long-term metabolic health.
Chronic disease integrationMany patients managing weight are also managing Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea or PCOS. We integrate the management of all conditions into a single coherent program.
Coordination with your GPWritten reports after every review keep your GP informed of your progress and any changes in your metabolic markers, supporting coordinated care and medication review where relevant.
Who We See
Metabolic health at every stage and presentation
We work with people across a wide range of weight and metabolic health presentations. You do not need to be at a particular weight or have a specific diagnosis to benefit from our programs.
Your Program
What to expect from start to finish
Every program starts with a comprehensive assessment. We do not prescribe exercise or nutrition before understanding your individual metabolic situation.
Initial assessment
We review your health history, current metabolic markers, medications, body composition using InBody scanning, fitness level and goals. We also assess any musculoskeletal factors that may affect your exercise capacity. This forms the foundation of your individual program.
Exercise program design
We design a progressive resistance and aerobic program targeted at your specific metabolic situation. The program is built around what you can do now and progressed systematically. It is delivered via our exercise app with videos and instructions for between-session training.
Dietitian consultation where appropriate
Where nutritional support will meaningfully improve your outcomes, we involve Samadi. She assesses your current dietary patterns and creates a practical nutrition plan aligned with your exercise program. The two plans are designed to work together, not independently.
Supervised sessions and monitoring
We supervise your exercise and monitor your metabolic response over time using repeat InBody scans, clinical measurements and subjective feedback. We adjust your program as your capacity and metabolic health improve.
Regular reviews with reports to your GP
Written reports are sent to your GP after every review, including changes in body composition, metabolic markers and functional capacity. This supports coordinated care and medication review where clinically appropriate.

Common Questions
Weight management FAQs
Do I need to be at a certain weight to start?
No. We work with people across a very wide range of body compositions and fitness levels. There is no minimum or maximum weight for our programs. We assess where you are now and design something appropriate for your current capacity. If you have been told by other programs or gyms that you need to lose weight before you can start exercising, that is not how we work.
Is this different from joining a gym?
Yes, fundamentally. A gym gives you access to equipment. We provide clinical assessment, individual exercise prescription, supervised sessions, metabolic monitoring, dietary support and coordination with your medical team. The exercise itself may look similar but the clinical framework, the individual prescription and the ongoing monitoring are what produce different outcomes.
Do I have to see the Dietitian?
Not necessarily. Some patients benefit primarily from Exercise Physiology alone. Others benefit significantly from the combination. We assess this at your initial appointment and recommend what we genuinely believe will produce the best outcome for your situation. You are never pressured to access services you do not need.
How long before I see results?
Metabolic change takes time. Most patients notice improvements in energy, strength and general wellbeing within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent exercise. Body composition changes typically become measurable at the 8 to 12 week mark. We measure progress through InBody scans, clinical markers and functional testing, not just weight, so you have a complete picture of what is changing.
Do I need a referral to start?
No. You can book directly and be seen privately. If you have a Medicare CDM plan from your GP that includes Exercise Physiology, bring it to your first appointment and we will process your $61.80 rebate on the spot.
