Medicare Exercise Physiology: common questions

How many Medicare Exercise Physiology sessions can I get per year?
Under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, Medicare covers up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year. These can all be used for Exercise Physiology. Sessions reset on 1 January each year and unused sessions do not carry over.
Do I need a GP referral for Medicare Exercise Physiology?
Yes. Your GP must create a Chronic Disease Management plan, sometimes called a GPMP (GP Management Plan) combined with a TCA (Team Care Arrangement), that includes Exercise Physiology. Once your GP has done this, they can refer you directly to Beachside EP.
Is Exercise Physiology bulk billed at Beachside EP?
Follow-up Medicare sessions at Beachside EP are bulk billed, meaning there is no out-of-pocket cost for you. A gap fee applies for the initial consultation. Call 0409 051 260 to confirm exact pricing for your situation before you book.
What is a Chronic Disease Management plan?
A Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan is a structured plan created by your GP to help manage a chronic health condition. It can include referrals to allied health professionals like Exercise Physiologists. The plan is reviewed regularly and you can use up to 5 allied health sessions per year under it.
What conditions qualify for a Medicare Exercise Physiology referral?
Any chronic or complex condition managed by a GP can qualify, including diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, chronic pain, obesity, mental health conditions and neurological conditions like Parkinson's. If you are unsure, ask your GP whether your condition qualifies for a CDM plan.
Can I use my Medicare sessions for group classes?
Yes, in some circumstances. Speak to us about your individual needs and we can advise whether group-based Exercise Physiology is appropriate and claimable under your Medicare plan.
What if I have already used some of my Medicare sessions elsewhere?
The 5 sessions per year are shared across all allied health providers. If you have used sessions at another clinic, the remaining sessions can be used at Beachside EP. Call us to discuss your situation and we can check eligibility before you book.
